Relief Carpal Tunnel Syndrome with a Wrist Brace

By Tom Nicholson

As more and more people have jobs that use the computer and require long periods of time typing, more people are suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome. The information age has brought about large changes in the nature of the work-a-day world. No longer are we employed in jobs that require the use of large motions and movements. Instead we are confined to a seated position throughout the day and performing repetitive motions. This is causing a sudden rise in the incidence of carpal tunnel syndrome. Everyone who owns a computer knows the discomfort of two much time spent typing or knows someone who suffers from this painful condition.

Most people seek the advice of a medical practitioner when the pain becomes so severe as to interfere with their day to day activities. Changing your activities and developing a treatment plan is the only way to heal a case of carpal tunnel syndrome. Often, family physicians will offer a diagnosis, but some will refer you to a specialist. It may be helpful to seek a second opinion, particularly if you are not satisfied with the first diagnosis or need reassurance on the treatment plan offered by the first physician. Make sure you understand what they are telling you about your condition and don't be afraid to ask questions.

Many wrist braces for carpal tunnel syndrome can be purchased at your local pharmacy store or medical supplier outlet without a referral from a doctor. These can come in an assortment of sizes and styles depending on your needs or the type of pain you are suffering from. With a variety of materials and shapes, you are sure to find the wrist brace that can help you perform your daily job duties or even just go through the night without discomfort. If you have any questions be sure to ask any sales staff to help you in fitting yourself with a wrist brace that is right for you. Taking care of pain or numbness is important and will not be effective if you are not outfitted with the correct wrist brace.

A wrist brace worn during the day while you work will keep your wrist immobile while performing your usual tasks. This relives the strain and allows the area to heal. It also will help you begin to get a feel for how to hold your hand and wrist in such a way as to relive the strain on the carpal tunnel ligament. If you wear the brace all day, take it off in the evening to give your hand a wrist a rest. Exercise the area by doing stretches and moving your wrist back and forth to loosen the ligaments.

Some people have so much pain at night that it keeps them awake. Wearing a wrist band while you are sleeping will be very helpful in this situation. This is particularly important if you cannot wear the brace during the day while you are working. At night we often experience prolonged wrist flexion or extension unawares. This causes the pain to be more severe. Again, if you wear the brace all night, take time to go without it and perform flexes and exercise to loosen the wrist. - 30453
